I saw Bob Dylan

Re: "I know some people don't like him, and apparently they're not objectively wrong to feel that way. I try to understand. If a person is accustomed to the musical equivalent of the candies you get out of those quarter machines at the mall, I can see where his voice might startle. If all your musical needs are satisfied at Sam Goody or via the local 'alternative music' FM franchise you're not going to be interested in actually listening to something. You might find it boring to sit through complete sentences with complex descriptives if you're into Justin Timberlake or Janet Jackson."

The arrogance of this paragraph is appalling.

It is possible to dislike Bob Dylan without also being a corporate music whore. I'm glad you enjoy his music, but it doesn't make you part of a special club that is any more or less intelligent or discerning than somebody who does not enjoy his music. From my perspective, Dylan's hodge-podge of American root music is nigh-unlistenable middle-of-the-road fogey-rock with strained, atonal vocals, and if I want to listen to that sort of thing I'll turn to Neil Young, who is for my money a much more vital and incendiary musician than Mr. Dylan.

That is my opinion, and I don't listen to Justin Timberlake.

Well, Kevin, I didn't mean to imply that everyone who dislikes Bob Dylan fits into the description laid out in that paragraph. I stand by the paragraph, however, as there are plenty of people it fits. There are way more 'corporate whores' in America than there are people who actively choose and listen to music. I spoke disdainfully and dismissively of them, but I didn't call them whores. I've known lots of people who just don't consider music to be anything that significant in their lives. You don't have to be a corporate whore to like music I don't like. I don't know what to call Justin Timberlake fans. Preteen girls?

And guess what? I've enjoyed LCD Soundsystem and Cat Power.

I have been known to occasionally lapse into arrogance, particularly when I'm being self-righteous.

Awesome review. So glad you could make it. Haters command a mysterious force; but lines like "Dylan's hodge-podge of American root music is nigh-unlistenable middle-of-the-road fogey-rock" instantly revoke their power, so don't sweat it.
