Over the past week or so I've watched a Jefferson Airplane film ('Fly'), most of the first three chunks of the surprisingly good four part VH1 documentary 'The Drug Years', and 'Psych Out', the old Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Dean Stockwell, Susan Strasberg thing. Also some other things.
It struck me today, you know that old "It's 2006, where's my flying car?" thing we all say? While it's true that The Jetsons set up a certain distant expectation...or maybe desire, I never really took that particular one too seriously. It was always distant future, at best.
But when I was a kid, up until I was about ten, in Berkeley, Castro Valley, and even in Concord, there was a certain expectation set up for my future that I think really did infect me at my core. I think it's a real part of my existential dissatisfaction.
It's 2006, where's my peaceful psychedelic sexy adventure world?
